One of the most common inflammatory diseases of the skin which affects many millions of adults and children world-wide is Eczema which is also called dermatitis. Eczema can sometimes appear during infancy and at times later in life although there is no known cause for the disease; it often affects people with a family history of allergies. Those who are genetically predisposed and then exposed to environmental triggers may develop eczema.

What are the possible causes of eczema?

Internal factors include a family history of eczema, asthma or allergic rhinitis - if both parents have eczema, there is a chance that their children will have it too. Stress is a well-known trigger of eczema. External factors usually are Irritants - tobacco smoke, chemicals, weather (hot and humid or cold and dry conditions) and air conditioning or overheating. Avoid wearing clothes that feel ‘itchy ‘if you already suffer from Eczema. Try to wear soft fabrics like cotton, which tend to be less irritating. It's also a good idea to wash all new clothes, linens, and towels before using them for the first time.

Treatments aim to control the symptoms of Eczema which can reduce inflammation and relieve itching. Avoid dry skin, moisturizer should be used frequently, avoid sudden changes in temperature or humidity, sweating or overheating, excessive use of water can increase severity of eczema- moisturizer is required after washing hands and after shower (link please website for Body Products/Products for medical issues), reduce stress, avoid rough materials, harsh soaps, detergents, and solvents. Avoid environmental factors that trigger allergies (e.g., pollens, molds, mites, and animal dander) and be aware of any foods that may cause an outbreak and avoid those foods. A diet rich in Omega-3 may be able to reduce symptoms. Vegetarian sources that are most beneficial are wheatgerm oil and Evening Primrose oil.
